elephant
Very quickly repopulating the area after being wiped out by poaching in the 1970s. The Mathews Range now holds around 4000 elephant many of whom can be seen most days at the camp watering hole and relaxing in the shade of the acacia trees.
leopard
Normally a solitary creature and a skilful predator. They prey mostly on dik dik in this area and can often be seen on one of our evening game drives. They use the ‘singing wells’ as a source of water too.
reticulated giraffe
Found only in the northern parts of East Africa, these giraffe have well defined white lines unlike giraffe found in the Maasai Mara. Our resident herd are increasing in number annually and getting more used to seeing vehicles, so we are able to gradually get closer to them as the years go by.
antelope
Greater Kudu, Lesser Kudu, Dik Dik, Gerenuk, and Klipspringer all abound here. There are very few places in Kenya where you can see the greater and lesser kudu together.
buffalo
Now resident but not often seen in day light at Sarara, they spend most of their day lying under the thick bush in search of shade. A large group has recently decided to take up residence near to the camp and can be seen in the flood lights of drinking hole in front of the mess area.
